Seventy-five years ago, the first credit union in America was organized to provide financial security to people of ordinary means. Today, credit unions constitute a modern, sophisticated financial system. However, their purpose is still to meet the financial needs of the average consumer.
The Kansas Teachers Credit Union was organized in November of 1949 as the Kansas State Teachers Federal Credit Union. Started from a desk drawer by P A Hoberholtzer the organizer of the credit union and it's first member.
For a short period the credit union was operated out of the College Bookstore on the Pittsburg State University campus. In November of 1960, the credit union changed from a federal charter to a state charted and became S.E.K. Teachers Credit Union. At this time the credit union moved to 105 W 5th Street and hired their first full time manager.
1968 found the credit union moving into a large facility and establishing it's presence on the main street in Pittsburg. In 1975, the credit union changed it's name to the current Kansas Teachers Credit Union. As services and members grew the credit union once again experienced growing pains. The building at 416 North Broadway was built in 1982 and moved into in December of that year. July of 1999 growth once again happened with the establishment of a branch office in Independence, KS.
The Kansas Teachers Community Credit Union is now a community based credit union serving over 14,000 members, with 3 locations. We continue to make service to our members a priority item while striving to meet their financial needs.
